This heavy-breathing French-made melodrama was set in 14th century Italy. When his village is overrun by an invading army, Italian patriot Lorenzo Ferrari refuses to stand by and do nothing. Targeted for execution as a radical, Ferrari escapes arrest by hiding out in the home of Gemma Rosario and her family. Ferrari is able to elude the authorities, but Gemma is captured and sentence to be beheaded at the Hour of Dawn (from the motion picture of the same name). Only if Lorenzo returns and surrenders himself will Gemma's life be spared. The film ends with a D.W. Griffith-like "last minute rescue," with the camera cross-cutting between Gemma trembling before the headsman and Ferrari leading an army of fellow rebels.
