Tamil filmmaker Raja Chandrasekhar directs this oft-filmed tale about the legendary third century B.C. King Ashoka (played by Chittor V. Nagaiah). At the film's outset, Ashoka's second wife Tishyarakshithai (P. Kannamba) lusts for the emperor's son Gunalan (M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar), trying unsuccessfully to seduce him. He prefers, however, the beautiful Pramila (T.V. Kumudini). Enraged at this perceived slight, Tishyarakshithai accuses him of seduction before the emperor. Furious, the emperor has his son blinded and exiled. Years later when he realizes his mistake, he is visited by Buddhist holy man who returns Gunalan to him and restores his son's eyesight.
