Sisir Bhaduri directs this Bengali love story about the clash between familial duty and the passions of the heart. Satyendra, a wealthy scion of an elite Bengali family, is obligated to follow through on an arranged marriage with his 11-year-old bride named Radharani, but he longs for the affections of the more mature, experienced courtesan called Bilji and all she represents: sophistication, modernity, and the West. This film proved to be a huge hit solidifying the popularity of the romantic melodrama as a generic constant in Indian film. This film was the premiere work for the venerable Taj Mahal studios.
