When most people think about surfing, their minds turn to exotic, sun-dappled locales in Southern California, Hawaii or the Caribbean. But any place with an ocean can have a surf spot, and in this documentary short from filmmaker Carolina Cruz Santiago, a handful of surfers from around the world come to New York City to check out the Atlantic Ocean's waves. Despite the often-chilly weather and lack of amenities for surfers, the energy and excitement of the Big Apple proves infectious, and a group of friendly local wave riders are on hand to see to it the international spirit of brotherhood among surf enthusiasts is extended to the visitors. Aloha New York received its world premiere at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival.
