Al Yemen is a filmed record of the Mejrabomfilm-Promethus expedition into the ancient land of Yemen. After establishing that this Middle Eastern country was once the hub of a vast Hebrew Empire (it is also said that it was once ruled by the Queen of Sheba), the film concentrates on the residents and customs of contemporary Yemen (which in 1930 was an autonomous Arabian state). Much is made of the cultural differences -- and inherent similarities -- between the country's Moslem majority and Jewish minority. In a mildly lurid sequence, the Yemenites are shown chewing on "ghat," a hallucinogenic drug leaf. In true "newsreel" fashion, the film ends with a military parade, which unfortunately elicited laughter from American audiences. A Russo-German co-production, Al Yemen managed to avoid propagandizing from either country.
