During the 2 1/2-years that followed the Third Reich's 1939 invasion of Poland, Great Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) generally stood alone in the battle against the Nazis, enabling Hitler's troops to permeate most of Europe. When December 1941 rolled around, however, the balance of power shifted dramatically. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor dragged the United States Armed Forces into the war and inadvertently bolstered Allied aerial capability, especially in European skies. The Allied air campaign became an aggressive, seemingly unstoppable war of attrition against the Nazis. The tide then began to shift away from fascism and toward democracy, as U.S. and British fliers liberated most of Western Europe from Hitler's iron thumb. Via a combination of archival footage and historical commentary, this documentary program tells the story of that spectacular transformation.
