This comedy-drama was based on the stage play of the same name. In spite of his father's attempts to interest him in business, Worthington Bryce (Eugene Strong) wants to try his hand at being an artist. The scrubwoman at Bryce's studio falls ill and her daughter, Phoebe-Ann (Gladys Leslie), takes over her duties. Bryce becomes interested in the pretty young girl's future and begins educating her. But Phoebe-Ann knows something her employer doesn't -- his fiancée, Lela Trevor (Agnes Ayres), loves his father's money more than she loves him. Although Phoebe-Ann loves Bryce herself, she keeps her mouth shut. Bryce's father gets fed up with supporting his son's artistic aspirations and cuts off his allowance, but Phoebe-Ann finds some short stories he has written and secretly submits them. They are published, and Bryce becomes a successful author. After a late supper, Lela and Bryce's friend Dick Moreland (Earl Schenck) end up in a compromising position at the studio. Phoebe-Ann catches them, but to keep Bryce from being hurt, she pretends to be the one romanced by Moreland. As Phoebe-Ann is getting ready to leave the next morning, Bryce's servant -- who knows everything -- locks her in a closet and tells Bryce the truth. Lela admits that she loves Moreland, and Phoebe-Ann gets her wish and becomes Bryce's sweetheart.
