109 in the Shade was a comedy, though this point was hotly contested by the unbemused reviewer in the trade magazine Variety. Arriving at home, a plumber puts his lighted firepot (one of the tools of his trade) on the floor and leaves the room. The plumber's maid enters, unknowingly placing a chair over the firepot. When the plumber seats himself in the chair, he quickly arises with a shout of pain, hopping about the room and fanning his posterior. The same thing happens to several other people who sit in that cursed chair.
