The Star Trek franchise continues with this follow-up to 2009's J.J. Abrams-directed reboot. Abrams returns to direct from a script by Damon Lindelof and the writing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The crew of the Enterprise engages in an epic battle of good versus evil after being summoned home, only to discover Starfleet in ruins, and they venture into a war zone to find the powerful villain (Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch) responsible for the devastation.
Phenomenal - this series keeps getting better!
Not as good as the first JJ Abrams Star Trek.
I would have been more entertained if the writers just let these characters do their own thing. At the end of the '09 movie, the crew got their ship and was ready to embark on its five year mission. At the end of this movie, we get the same. Just let them go on their own missions already. Wasn't that the point of the whole alternate timeline thing anyway: to let go of the past and start anew? This was fine enough as an action movie, but even the most passive Star Trek fan will just want these characters to grow a little. As a sophomore effort, this movie fails.
I second all that below. Fantastic enjoyable fast paced fun times. The title and tone are misleading. I wouldn't call it into darkness. I'd call it "It got dark for like a moment." But yeah, lots of juicy bits for fans--would totally see it gain.
Totally agree with the reviews below, big budget spectacle, massive plot-holes, lots of nods to long term fans. Completely enjoyable.
In the words of another movie "Are we not entertained?" By the numbers giant SF spectacle, as good as Hollywood can hope to pull off, and I kind of mean that in a good way. One thing elevates it: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty. As created by Gene Roddenberry these iconic characters are faithful to the originals, cleverly updated and wonderfully cast by JJ Abrams and their dynamic is a blast.
Such big fun and tons of easter eggs for us long term Trekkies to enjoy.
Long live New Vulcan!
