A pilot with a substance abuse problem has to land a crippled airliner in this Robert Zemeckis-directed drama for Paramount Pictures. Real Steel's John Gatins provides the script. Denzel Washington heads up a starring cast that includes The Hurt Locker's Brian Geraghty, along with John Goodman and Don Cheadle.
Don't watch this if you're afraid of flying.
The plane crash scene at the beginning of the film was wonderfully directed. Denzel is also fine playing a man whose life has been wrecked by a dependence on alcohol.
depictions of drinking a little too dramatic. straight vodka out of the bottle?
Excellent acting and message.
Riveting, powerful drama that was impossible to turn away from. Despite some very difficult to watch scenes, Denzel Washington gives one of his best performances as Whip Whitaker, the drunk but heroic pilot who was able to hide his demons from the world but not himself. This deep, thought provoking drama about alcoholism-addiction, consequences and redemption, culpability and lies will remain with me for a very long time. The plane crash sequence had me digging my nails nails into my chair. The best film about character, pathos, circumstance, and the emotions of an exceptionally complex human that I've seen in a long long while. 5 big stars! Director Zemekis is at the top of his craft in this deeply moving story told so well.
Hated the script. Didn't much like Denzel. John Goodman was fantastic, though.
